We are not AARP and we are not sitting back and waiting for someone else to do something to protect our benefits.

Spending Cut  Proposals to Be Solicited at Town Hall Meetings

 Even as the Fiscal Commission created by President Obama conducts its monthly meetings, some Members of Congress are planning Town Hall Meetings for the upcoming Memorial Day Recess (May 29-June 7) to solicit spending reduction proposals from the public.  This opens the possibility that some constituents could suggest to their lawmakers that federal retirement and health benefits be cut.  In turn, legislators could gather these suggestions and seek to offer them as amendments to pending legislation even before election day!
NARFE’s best defense is vigilant attendance and participation at every Congressional Town Hall Meeting and the electronic cousin, telephone Town Hall Conference Calls.  In sum, we urge NARFE members to be cautious of proposals by members of Congress at these meetings which would promote benefit cuts and take acquiescence by attendees as endorsement. NARFE members should contact their Representative and both Senators and asked to be informed when any Town Hall Meetings – in person or telephonic -- are scheduled during the Memorial Day Recess.  NARFE continues to make its Toll Free number, 1-866-220-0044, available for reaching the Capitol switchboard.  Ask for your Representative and Senators by name.  The NARFE web site also provides regularly updated information about many, but not all, Congressional Town Hall Meetings.

House Republican leaders have issued a set of Deficit Reduction Proposals including several impacting current federal employees.  Best known among the group is a proposal to base retirement calculations on the “High 5” instead of the current ‘High 3” years of salary.  NARFE denounced the proposal as an attack on the earned economic security of federal workers and annuitants.

There are stories that are becoming very real as our income does not keep pace with this new assault of higher prices. We can barely support ourselves when our government wants to decrease our retirement income and raise the cost of health care.

What can we do as individuals to secure our retirement funds and health benefits?

We have a force in Washington, DC that can speak for us if we join hands across America and be part of NARFE which is a short name for The National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association.

We have a force to be reckoned with and we can become stronger as each of us joins The National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association.
 

The National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association one of America's oldest and largest associations, was founded in 1921 with the mission of protecting the earned rights and benefits of Americas active and retired federal workers. The largest federal employee/ retiree organization, NARFE has a membership of men and women and represents the interests of nearly 2.3 million federal retirees and spouses.
 

In the United States people have a thing about Unions or anything that have people joining together in local assemblies. Ronald Reagan fired Federal Employees who went on strike because of a labor dispute.

Where does the idea of people becoming a union come from?
