Earlene Burney
Laughter and tears were plentiful
during Earlene Burney's poignant and educational program presented on Alzheimer's
Disease. A fine and knowledgeable speaker, retired educator Earlene Burney
of Clarksville,TN, was the featured speaker at the NARFE 2007 Kentucky
Federation of Chapters Convention held at the Holiday Inn Downtown in Louisville
in Kentucky on Thursday May 17, 2007 Banquet.
She also spoke at the District I
Spring Sprint which was held at Miss Scarlet's Restaurant (Exit 31
on I-24) near the Land Between the Lakes in far Western Kentucky.
Burney, of Clarksville, TN, became
a caregiver when her mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease. She
used her background in education to research and teach herself about the
best ways to confront the disease. She and her family struggled for twelve
years through trial and error, using first the routine approaches, and
later more innovative ideas geared specifically to her mother's personality,
to maintain the highest quality of life for her mother.
“Along the way, I realized how dreadful
the disease is and wanted to do so much more to help persons who are dealing
with disease, whether it was the patient or family,” said Ms. Burney.
She became an advocate for the elderly,
especially those with Alzheimer's Disease. She has spoken before various
legislative committees at the Tennessee General Assembly. At the request
of The Department of Justice and Democracy in Washington, D.C., she has
spoken before congressional and senate committees about her experiences
with the disease on numerous occasions. Ms. Burney has been a speaker for
the Vanderbilt-Meharry Geriatric Education Foundation. She now spends her
time traveling across Tennessee and surrounding states speaking at conferences
and for support groups and schools teaching about a daughter's perspective
on this disease.
